The king of the cellar is the 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru, a beautiful wine that offers up aromas of sweet cherries, wild berries, raw cocoa, warm spices and candied peel, complemented by ineffable savory nuances and a classy top note of peony. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and vibrant with juicy acids and a deep core of vibrant fruit that largely cloaks its fine structuring tannins. The Clos de Bèze may be richer and heartier, but the Chambertin is finer, longer and more complete. This is a generous crop for Domaine Armand Rousseau, which will come as some relief to wine lovers smarting over reduced allocations in the frost-ravaged 2016 vintage, Cyrielle Rousseau describing the 2017 growing season as easy and uneventful by comparison. In keeping with the vintage, the wines are supple and open-knit, reminiscent of the decidedly charming 2007 vintage at this address. While this year's portfolio doesn't hit the highs of 2016 and 2015, the wines will also demand less patience, offering more immediate pleasure. There have been some changes of personnel at this venerable address, but Cyrielle Rousseau seems increasingly self-assured at the helm, and progress appears to be being made in the vines of the Château de Gevrey-Chambertin which the domaine has been working for some years now. I look forward to seeing how the 2017s show from bottle—the mise being planned for February-March—after they complete their élevage.

This grand cru digests the oak more quickly than does Clos de Bèze, apparently. Really spicy. Quite peppery and just a little smoky. But there’s that purple peony perfume underneath. Violet hearts. More chewy than most so far but still with succulent fluid fruit at the core. That chewiness changes to a really refined texture on the finish (unlike the vice versa of most wines).

Generous wood is present on the ultra-fresh and incredibly spicy nose that reflects notes of reserved red berries, the sauvage, earth, floral and exotic tea wisps. The mouthfeel of the imposingly constituted and admirably concentrated flavors is one of contrasts as the mid-palate is quite supple yet the powerful, driving, austere and muscular finish is robust, serious and austere. This is jaw droppingly good and somewhat curiously relative to how the two wines typically show at this stage, this is the flashier of the two. We'll see in time though as it's usually the Chambertin that goes into a shell only to emerge 20+ years later. Be that as it may, today this is a genuine 'wow' wine.
