Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Bonneau du Martray’s Corton-Charlemagne 2011 has a mineral-driven bouquet – linear and taut, with slate and granite aromas gradually unfurling in the glass. The palate is clean and fresh with supremely well-judged acidity. Touches of apricot and mango lie in the background with the citrus element playing the main role. Beautifully balanced, this is the Corton-Charlemagne of the flight with impressive tension and persistence.

From magnum. Flinty, smoky, tart green apple. Voluminous and bold, but doesn't seem as wide-reaching as you might expect. Is this the slow development of a magnum? Lots of length and core concentration, so certainly worth keeping to find out.

Not surprisingly this really hasn't changed very much from my original review last year (see herein) other than I have extended the initial drinking window slightly. I repeat the note here: There is a hint of mandarin orange to the otherwise more classic aromas of white peach, green apple, citrus and wet stone. The well-detailed and intensely stony medium weight plus flavors possess an excellent sense of underlying tension on the saline-infused, dry and well-balanced finish. I like the mid-palate concentration and while this is already delicious, this is sufficiently serious as to require another 4 to 6 years of cellar time.
